Preventing Heart Disease

According to the American Heart Association, more than one-third of American adults have one or more types of cardiovascular disease, which is why our cardiac team remains committed to offering a broad array of cardiac services with care.

If you have a family history of heart disease, are older than 65, or have high stress levels, you're at a greater risk for developing heart disease. To decrease your risk, try to control your blood pressure and cholesterol with a healthy diet and regular exercise. These measures will also help manage your weight. Do not smoke as smoking can increase your risk of heart attack.

Recognizing Symptoms of Heart Disease

If you have a history of high blood pressure, diabetes, or other medical conditions that may drastically increase your risk for heart disease, it's important to monitor your diet, implement an exercise routine, and remain alert to any abnormal symptoms.

Although coronary artery disease, atrial fibrillation, stroke and heart attacks are all unique components of heart disease, many warning signs for these conditions are the same.

If you experience any of the following signs of heart disease, immediately seek medical attention:

  • Chest discomfort
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Pain in the jaw or back
